Talk to anyone, even without a language in common
Not sharing a language used to end a conversation before it began. On Penpalmap, a free account can translate the messages you receive into your language, so you can talk to someone on the other side of the world. It is free and ad-free. Starting takes seconds, and translation is one step away with a free account.
Why translation changes everything
The people on the map speak hundreds of languages. Without translation you would only meet those who share yours. With it, you can open a profile in any country and write in your own language. Translation covers the 25 languages of the app, and you read in the one you choose.
How to translate a message
You need a free account: a temporary profile cannot translate. Under each message you receive, a Translate button shows the message in your language, just under the original, labelled as translated by Microsoft with the original language. You can also switch on Translate conversation at the top of a chat: the messages you receive that are on screen are then translated for you. You can turn it off at any time and choose your reading language in Settings.
What happens to your messages
To translate a message, Penpalmap sends it to Microsoft Translator, through its European endpoint. The message is not kept there, and Penpalmap does not store the translations either. Only the messages you receive are translated, never the ones you write. Messages are encrypted in our database. The service has limits so that it can stay free: translation can occasionally be unavailable, and you can try again later.
Tips for talking across languages
Write short, simple sentences: they translate better. Avoid slang and figures of speech. Check that the translation makes sense before you answer, and ask if something is unclear. Be patient and kind: the other person may be reading a translation of your words too.
Frequently asked questions
Is message translation free?
Yes. It comes with a free account, and Penpalmap has no ads. To stay free, the service has usage limits, so translation can occasionally be unavailable.
Do I need an account to translate messages?
Yes, a free account. You can start chatting without one, with a temporary profile, but translation is only for accounts. Creating one takes a single step and you keep your profile and your conversations.
Are my messages sent to another company?
Only to be translated. A message you ask to translate is sent to Microsoft Translator, where it is not kept. The privacy policy gives the details.
